Purpose
Celtic Tigers Basketball Club is committed to providing a safe, welcoming and supportive environment where players can enjoy basketball, develop their skills and contribute positively to their team and Club.
This Code of Conduct sets out the behaviour expected of all players, coaches, parents, carers and spectators and should be read alongside the Basketball Victoria Codes of Conduct adopted by Ballarat Basketball.

By registering to play with Celtic Tigers, players and their nominated parent/carer or primary contact agree to abide by this Code of Conduct and all applicable Basketball Victoria and Ballarat Basketball codes, policies and competition rules.
Expectations of Everyone
Everyone representing or supporting Celtic Tigers is expected to:
- Treat players, coaches, referees, officials, volunteers and spectators with respect.
- Respect the rights, dignity and worth of every person, regardless of their background, ability or role.
- Demonstrate good sportsmanship in both victory and defeat.
- Refrain from abusive, threatening, discriminatory, intimidating or harassing behaviour.
- Respect the decisions of referees and officials and raise concerns through the appropriate channels rather than confronting or abusing officials.
- Contribute to a positive, inclusive and supportive basketball environment.
- Respect basketball venues, facilities and equipment.
- Remember that basketball should be enjoyable for everyone involved.
Players
Players are expected to:
- Understand and play by the rules and spirit of the game.
- Control their temper and behave appropriately towards teammates, opponents and officials.
- Work hard for themselves and their team.
- Listen to their coach and make a reasonable effort to apply coaching advice.
- Focus on enjoyment, development, teamwork and giving their best effort.
- Notify their coach as early as possible if they are unable to attend a game or training session.
Coaches
Coaches have a particular responsibility to create a positive, safe and development-focused environment for their players. Coaches are expected to:
- Place player enjoyment, development and wellbeing ahead of winning.
- Ensure all team players get fair and adequate court time in accordance to our Court Time Policy
- Be reasonable in their expectations and demands of players.
- Teach and encourage respect for the rules, opponents and officials.
- Provide players with reasonable opportunities to participate and develop.
- Model the behaviour and sportsmanship expected of their players.
- Take account of players' age, ability and physical development when conducting training and managing teams.
- Act responsibly when players are injured or unwell and place their welfare first.
- Maintain appropriate professional boundaries with players and ensure any physical contact is appropriate.
- Maintain an appropriate knowledge of basketball rules, coaching practices and relevant Club policies.
- Follow the Celtic Tigers Fill-In Player Policy when arranging fill-in players.
Parents and Carers
Parents and carers are expected to:
- Encourage children to participate for their own enjoyment and development.
- Focus on effort, improvement, teamwork and sportsmanship rather than simply winning.
- Lead by example and positively support players from both teams.
- Avoid publicly criticising, ridiculing or humiliating any player.
- Support coaches, team managers and other volunteers in providing a positive environment for players.
- Ensure children in their care are appropriately supervised at basketball venues.
- Notify the coach as early as possible if their child is unable to attend a game or training session.
Spectators
Spectators are expected to:
- Provide positive and appropriate support to players.
- Encourage good sportsmanship and respect for the rules.
- Refrain from inappropriate comments or behaviour directed towards players, coaches, referees, officials or other spectators.
- Ensure children in their care are appropriately supervised.
Raising Concerns
Concerns regarding the behaviour of players, coaches, parents, spectators, referees or officials should be raised through the appropriate channels rather than through confrontation during or after a game.
Concerns relating to Celtic Tigers should be reported to: celtictigerscommittee@gmail.com
Where possible, reports should include the date, game or event, people involved, a description of what occurred and any relevant witnesses.
Serious incidents or immediate safety concerns occurring at a Ballarat Basketball venue should also be brought to the attention of the appropriate venue or Ballarat Basketball official.
Breaches of the Code
Reported breaches will be considered by the Celtic Tigers Committee and, where appropriate, investigated before disciplinary action is taken.
The response will depend on the seriousness and circumstances of the conduct, whether it is repeated, and any relevant Celtic Tigers, Ballarat Basketball or Basketball Victoria policies.
Actions may include a warning, conditions on participation, suspension from Club activities, or referral to Ballarat Basketball or another appropriate governing body.
Serious or repeated breaches, or matters involving participants outside Celtic Tigers, may be referred to Ballarat Basketball for further investigation or action. This may include restrictions or suspension from Ballarat Basketball venues or competitions.
Celtic Tigers may also take reasonable interim action where necessary to protect the safety and wellbeing of participants while a serious matter is being investigated.
